For many Americans, the winter season has been rough to make ends meet when it comes to paying bills; from heating expenses to the holidays, money can be very tight. Being able to afford the heating bill is most likely the priority during the winter. Between inflation and this winter speculated to be colder than previous ones within the United States, many Americans find themselves in a familiar boat of worrying about their heating bill.
The Biden administration announced on November 2nd that they are planning to use $4.5 billion to help aid expenses when it comes to home heating costs. This is due to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, aka LIHEAP, which has been helping lower home heating costs since 1981. Last year they took a significant role in helping the Biden administration use $8 billion last winter to help with Joe Biden's COVID-19 relief plan, which had mixed results from consumers.
The money will be used to not only help over 5 million Americans pay their heating bills but also aim to "repair" their homes to make them more cost-effective when it comes to home heating in the first place. "One of the best ways a family can reduce their energy bill is to make their home more energy efficient," said Vice President Kamala Harris. A big problem that has been documented when it comes to upgrading a house to make it more cost-effective is the high upfront cost of getting the equipment installed in the first place and the fear that the installment fees are just too expensive. This home heating plan aims to take on that fear head-on and help Americans.
The Biden administration and LIHEAP have a hard task cut out for them as inflation has been a big factor in the economy when it comes to things such as natural gas. The conflict in Ukraine has also led to big inflation rates as well when talking about natural gas. This small step for the Biden Administration is just the beginning in the ongoing movement to help Americans heat their homes. Just recently, the Energy Department stated that over $9 billion would be used over the next ten years to help heat and improve 1.6 million homes in America. "As heating costs increase, it is more important than ever to help families struggling to make ends meet," said Xavier Becerra, the Health and Humanities Services Secretary.
