What is Joe Biden Expecting of China Over the Next Two Years?
Recently Joe Biden and the leader of China, Xi Jinping, got together to talk about the future of the relationship between America and China and what the two countries expect from each other moving on in the next two years. President Joe Biden was eager to meet with Xi Jinping for two reasons, he has only talked to the leader of China 5 times since he took presidency back in 2020, and of those five times they met, it was over the phone or video call, but this was mainly due to COVID-19 restrictions. Secondly, both America and China view themselves as powerhouses in regard to competition, and this meeting would help them to talk about meeting eye to eye going forward.
Joe Biden had a clear outline of the topics he wanted to bring up to Xi Jinping that he wanted to cover and discuss. Joe Biden has always been straightforward with China's leader, leaving no room for assumptions, he told reporters on Monday. Joe Biden was quick to mention the economic practices of Taiwan and China's rocky relationship with Taiwan. The reason why China has a hostile relationship with Taiwan is due to the fact that Bejing still views Taiwan as a part of China despite Taiwan being independent of China since 1949. Biden made it clear to Xi Jinping that the United States is willing to take action if China violently gets involved with Taiwan.
Joe Bidens next point was for Xi Jinping to take verbal action against Vladimir Putin due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Joe Biden also wants China to rethink its decision on denying supporting goods being sent to Ukraine. Joe Biden has been making his voice very heard in the ongoing Russian-Ukraine conflict, so he thinks that it is very important for China to show its support of Ukraine, even if it's the bare minimum.
It is known that China has had many issues with human rights, and many stories have come out in the past few years regarding their "education camps. Which are actually internment camps where forced labor and other unethical practices are carried out. Donald Trump implemented different tariffs on this part of China, trying to combat the forced labor in Beijing. And just like Trump made an effort, Joe Biden is asking Xi Jinping again to put more effort into correcting the human rights issues in Beijing.
These were the three biggest issues that Joe Biden felt it was necessary to talk to Xi Jinping about in order to move forward with their relationship as leaders. Though Joe Biden thinks more topics could be collaborated on in the future, like health issues, climate change, and battling drugs, Joe Biden thinks taking "smaller" steps is more important right now.
