Is World War Three About to Happen?

Russia has been in troubled waters so far this year, starting off the year with the invasion of Ukraine. Nine months later, with the Ukraine invasion still ongoing, Russia just did something new that has NATO looking at them closer than ever. Early in the morning of November 15th, Russia bombed Poland with a missile killing two citizens of Poland. The missile that struck Poland came down in Przewodow, which is just 3 1/2 miles from the Ukrainian border. It is still unclear if the missile actually came from Russia, but Russia is highly suspected despite Russia's defense ministry denying that the missile originated from Russia.

United States President Joe Biden was quick to call an emergency meeting Tuesday morning after being woken up by the news. Joe Biden called up the "Group of Seven," which consist of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, which are all NATO allies. Biden has denied any information to the press on the ongoing situation in Poland.

When looking at the recent history of Russia from an outside point of view, it would be a safe assumption that Russia was the one to fire the missile. They have been in an ongoing dispute with Ukraine, which is right next to Poland, as the missile was only a few miles away from the border of Ukraine. It was most likely a mistake on Russia's behalf regarding where the missile had landed. However, it makes sense from a Russian point of view to deny what happened. Russia. The country is already in hot water with many countries around the world, including NATO, and they are also being shunned by these countries as well. Though if it is true that the missile did come from Russia and they had already denied it, Russia will be sorry for trying to make it seem like it wasn't their missile in the first place.

A Foreign Ministry in Poland said they had tagged the missile as a Russian one, but the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, is not agreeing with that statement knowing the weight it holds if it were to be true. Currently, many of the powerhouses of NATO are on the edge of their seats to see what happens next. Could it be World War Three?

  1. Hey Jackson,

Good post overall. This was an event that up until now I was not aware of. Like many people, I have become distance from the current situation in Ukraine, mostly due to other more concerning domestic issues. Yet, it is still a great issue nonetheless. The likelihood of the missile originating from Russia is fairly likely. Ukraine could have launched the missle with intent of blaming it on the Russians in an effort to get Poland involved in the war. Somewhat similar to accusation made during the USS Liberty incident, in which some claimed that Israeli pilots attacked an American ship with the intent to blame it on the Egyptians. Yet, such a thought process delves into conspiratorial thinking, but with how untruthful both Russian and Ukrainian media have been, in recent memory its somewhat hard not to. What most likely occurred is that the missile was launched by Russia and accidentally missed its target and went over the border into Poland. What is simply the collateral damage of being a neighboring country in a war, has been exaggerated

  2. Hi Jackson,
I was stunned to hear of this on the news not to long ago. You did a great job at explaining the events in Poland as well as describing the possible effects this can have on the United States. As allies, there is a likely chance of involvement if this threat continues and lets be real, I don't think that threat is going away anytime soon. Staying informed is all we can do until decisions are made. Posts like this is a great way to stay informed. Thank you for posting this and great job!

  3. The threat of war is a very scary thing. I remember reading about this missile situation and being quite scared. Your post expanded on my fairly surface level research in a very sufficient way.
