Biden's Student Aid Plan Already Falling Apart? v3

President Joe Biden has been pushing hard on his student loan debt relief. He promises $10,000 in relief for households whose income is below $125,000. This sort of student debt relief has been a big focus for the Democratic party, and many are happy to finally see action being taken in such an easy and approachable way. Biden was happy to announce that 22 million Americans have already gone through the process of signing up for the relief.

Though Joe Biden and his administration have already had to jump through many hoops to get to this point, one more obstacle has shown up. On October 21st, the federal court "temporarily blocked President Joe Biden's plan to cancel billions of dollars in federal student loans." (Salter) The group that has made this halt possible were some of the Republican-led states. If one recalls, these were the same states already giving the student loan debt relief plan a hard time in court when the plan was coming to fruition. The Biden administration was already delaying their debt relief actions due to other legal complications from third parties, and this situation has furthered that delay. There is a large amount of uncertainty from the public due to the un-pause of student loan payments taking action on January 1st, halted initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Biden administration is hopeful, encouraging those to continue signing up for the relief plan. "The Administration will continue to fight Republican officials suing to block our efforts to provide relief to working families," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre said. Biden has been very vocal in this case, stating that the Republicans opposing the student debt relief plan are wrong and hypocritical.

As this case continues to develop, we will have to see how long the Republican party can put a halt on the student debt relief plan or if they can permanently shut it down. The Biden administration, as stated before, is working very hard; U.S. citizens, especially college students, will have to sit back and see what comes of this.

  1. I find the current state of Biden's student aid forgiveness plan to be unsurprising. Weather you supported it or not most people could agree from the beginning that the successes of the entire plan was unlikely. Not just considering the immense amount of money required to make such a thing happen but also the legal issues, and pushback from both Republicans and other Democrats. At this point it is clear that the entire projects intent was solely to increase voter turnout in the midterm election. As soon as the election is said and done with it would not be surprising to see the plan be completely forgotten about by the Democrats and the Biden administration.
