Conveniently Timed Tweets Helping Joe Biden Stay Out of Trouble in the Public Eye?
A recent Tweet from Joe Biden shows that with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, they are investing over $25 billion dollars to upgrade the infrastructure of America's airports. One may ask why American airports need help finically. There are a few reasons, and recently, there have been more and more canceled flights due to understaffing of airlines to the airports themselves. This has led to the quality of the airports deteriorating and other understaffing issues. Also, American airports are lacking in many areas compared to other countries. President Joe Biden said, "We've talked about having the best economy in the world... we're finally Getting it done."
Though despite wanting to keep up efforts in competing to have the best airports and other transportation systems in the world, does this tweet seem somewhat conveniently timed when looking at the day it was tweeted? Right after the 21st anniversary of 9/11. Was this done so that the fresh reminder of 9/11 and the cause and effect results of 9/11, like better airport security, what it did to our country's morale, etc., were on the forefront of people's minds? So that Joe Biden wouldn't get any harsh feedback for spending $25 billion on American airports instead of more important problems such as the current recession America's economy is in right now? Whether convenient or intentional intentions or not, people on Twitter do what they do best, they backlashed. Most complaining about student loan relief, the economy, and those still making fun of the billions sent to Ukraine are just a few of the complaints people brought up. What do you think? Did Joe Biden tweet this knowing the importance of airport maintenance and infrastructure would be at the forefront of the peoples' minds right after the 21st anniversary of 9/11 so he wouldn't get harsh feedback on spending so much, or was it a coincidence?

Hi Jackson! Great question. Honestly, in my opinion it's partly both. I think he most definitely tweeted about airlines to make a connection to 9/11 but I don't think it was a target to warrant off backlash. From what I see, being President means that's pretty much impossible. So if that was his goal, he didn't go a very good job. Also, the pilot strikes that have been happening recently have been quite concerning. No one wants a sleepy pilot. They have grueling hours and are in clear need of help. I'd hope the $25 billion Biden is allocating to airports help lessen that burden. Further onto that, it's also been liberating to see so many workers go on strike. Wages haven't been keeping up with inflation; people are tired. We're starting to see workers realize they have more power than they think they do. Going back to your post though, I do wonder how many actions are made to veer off public attention. I'm sure it's more than we notice.
ReplyDeleteHey Jackson,
ReplyDeleteGood post overall. Judging by the date the tweet was made it is certainly suspicious that it was done so with the intent to draw a connection back to the events that took place on September 11th. Yet, though it does seem somewhat suspicious I would argue it was either a coincidence or it was even deliberately done so after 9/11, to avoid accusations that the tweet was using such as tragedy for a political purpose. Regardless, posting it the day after 9/11 was still in somewhat bad taste as it was fresh on the mind of the reader. Even though there are concerns with the current state of the U.S. aviation industry I still think the tweet should have been made at a later date.
